Anterior Cruciate Ligament Rehabilitation

ACL injuries are common in many sports. The consequences following an ACL injury are devastating and can be career-ending for many athletes. Rehabilitation program have a major role to play in a successful outcome and preventing future complications.

Preoperative rehab of ACL injury
A small percentage of patients with ACL injuries might be suitable for non-operative management.

Rehabilitation concepts are similar for both operative and nonoperative treatment of ACL injuries. However non-operative treatment is different with an increased emphasis on neuromuscular training to restore joint stability.

Balance & proprioception

Functionally independent.

Post operative rehab of ACL injury

ROM active / passive full range without pain.
Bracingis to prevent re-injury in the acute stage. This is dependent on environmental exposure.
Weight-Bearing Allow healing and restore joint homeostasis as soon as possible.
Stationary bike
Resistance weight-bearing strength training:
Coordination, balance and proprioception training
Flexibility protocol
Return to sports conditioning

  • Running- Ability to run for 20 minutes
  • Back squat/Leg press
  • Balance test
  • Quad girth within 1 cm compared to the contralateral side
  • Hamstrings/Quad ratio strength
  • Single leg drops
