Geriatric physiotherapy has become an important key factor in the elderly care. It has proven beneficial to improve mobility, balance, build strength, and boost confidence in their physical activities.
Risk factors in elderly
Gait and balance impairment (Parkinson’s, GBS, PNS)
Peripheral neuropathy
Vestibular dysfunction
Muscle weakness, Vision impairment
Medical illness, advanced age
Impaired activities of daily living (ADLs)
They are highly prevalent in older adults, especially the frail elderly. Their impact on quality of life and disability is substantial. Multiple underlying factors, involving multiple organ systems, tend to contribute to, and define, geriatric syndromes.
Our aim in geriatric rehabilitation.
Functional independence is our ultimate goal.
To relieve pain
To improve and maintain ROM
To maintain cardiovascular fitness
To maintain or improve ambulation.
We at Dr.Vimal’s physiotherapy and sports injury clinic include assessment of a person’s abilities and difficulties in performing functional tasks. For older adults, the physical tasks of daily life are an important starting point for treatments.
Having assessed the older adult performing a task like chair transfers, we identify the underlying impairments impacting on the task.
We take Appropriate care with some treatment techniques, and more time allowed for the learning and practice of skills and exercises with elderly.
Our Goals is directed towards the management and improvement of a condition rather than passive ‘care’ towards the older person.
